Shoe-Buying Basics

At metro run & walk we specialize in helping YOU select a pair of shoes that will enhance your running and walking experience. This is a process in which you are an active participant.

What We Do
We follow a process called INTERVIEW, SELECT and EXPLAIN. We will talk to you about your running. We will look at your foot. We will watch you jog. Then, we will recommend a variety of shoes which meet the characteristics you require. We will explain why we selected the group of shoes we've brought out.

What You Do
You will try each of several pairs of shoes and choose the one that feels the most COMFORTABLE and NATURAL on your foot. The one that fits the best will often feel lighter even though there will be no actual difference between the weight of the shoes. The best shoe will roll naturally when you run or walk with no slapping of the ground.
Athletic shoes are made of synthetic materials and will not stretch or give the way leather shoes do. The shoes should be completely comfortable in the store. There is little to no break in period for the shoe but there may be a short break in period for YOUR body. This is especially true if you are going from a very old, broken down pair of shoes.
Everyone likes to wear their shoes differently from a size standpoint. We recommend a snug fit in the heel and midfoot with enough room to "wiggle" your toes freely in the shoe while standing up. However, size is a very personal matter and is a decision only you can make.

New Shoes Can...give you increased shock absorption and support.
They can provide you a more pleasant running and walking experience. They may help prevent an injury, but...

New Shoes Cannot...heal an existing injury.
They will not cause your knee to hurt, stop your back from hurting,or hurt your hip. They will not prevent you from ever getting injured.

Things To Think About
How many miles per week/per run do you run? How many do you want to run? What issues have you had with running/walking in the past? What shoes have you worn successfully in the past? Unsuccessfully? What injuries have you had in the past? Do you blister easily? Have you had "black toenails?"
